BCM Group Receives 2 Federal Grants

May 12, 2009 – 7:44 pm

The Brain, Computation and Mind (BCM) research group has recently been awarded two major federal grants:

DOE Grant #DE-PS02-09ER09-01: Computational Sciences Research Initiative (CSRI@TAMUC)
Investigators: Sam Saffer, Derek Harter, Shulan Lu, Frank Miskovich
$390k / 1 year (with possibility of continued funding past 2010)

The purpose of the Computational Sciences Research Initiative @ TAMUC is to a) acquire and deploy a major high performance cluster computing (HPCC) research infrastructure and b) develop an interdisciplinary research group of physical and social scientists interested in applying scientific modeling and visualization to research domains and problems being explored at TAMUC.

We will be acquiring a 64 node / 256 processing element computing cluster, to be housed in the new Science building, and organizing groups and projects to conduct research using the instrument starting this Fall 2009.

NSF Grant #0916749: Perceiving and Enacting Actions in Simulated Training Environments
Investigators: Shulan Lu, Derek Harter and Tracy Henley
$500k / 3 years

This grant will look at training and learning in simulated (Virtual Reality) environments. In particular, how does the perception of events and risk affect the learning experience in virtual training environments. And how might insights into perceptual/motor reactions to simulated training situations be better applied to increase the effectiveness of the training experience in such environments.
